Segeltorpsvägen early 70:s. A privat villa with a freestanding garage excavated out of a hill of dirt. Wet and cold. But space enough for 2 cars and lots of tyres. Kalle Grundel had found it for rent so we finally had our first garage.
Kalle had just started his career as rally driver and his Simca needed almost daily service as he spent most of his evening and nights practising in the dirt roads of Huddinge.
Race was in weekends all over stockholm and surrounding cities within 500 km.
He had a crew who followed and worked at service stops. They spend many hours with us in the garage. We always was a gang standing in the woods cheering when he passed. Some of us was Huddinge Motor Club members and worked at races.
I had a Volvo PV, or two. Last had a B18 and I molded the rear fenders for a smooth curve between the body and fender. We often lifted out and in our engines, why I have forgot but I remember how I did it alone.
We had a 3m long rod and a rope. The rod was placed diagonally over the engine on the fenders. I knotted the rope around the engine and rod. Then Kalles all tyres started to help. One pile on each side under the rod and one tyre in your hand.
First side, used the scholder and lift, up with a new tyre and release. Next side, the same. Repeat until the engine is hanging free.
Roll back the car and do it all in reverse order.
In case we both was there we had one side each.
Anyway, It was cold and wet, but fun as long as we had it. Later we shared a huge community garage with one of Kalles sponsors, Jourman pumps.
